Review of Sublime (2007) by Steve Z — 16 Nov 2009
Had all the makings of a good movie, but just couldn't pull it out in the end. By trying to make this movie hard to understand, the creators just made it suck. The end explains the whole thing, which, if we'd had any possible way to figure it out ourselves, would have been incredible.
Instead, we get tossed a strange black doctor who alludes to problems of the main character which we never see, and claims those problems supersede racism, which is not proved by the rant of racist remarks by the man.
This movie had a good ending, that's it, nothing else. As an added statement, I viewed the commentary, which made me lose all respect for the filmmakers. Turns out, pound after pound of needless and unclear political commentary was injected into every facet of this film, and terrible artistic imagery was the focus of many of the films crappiest scenes.
When movie makers start saying that the East Ward is where terrible things happen because Eastward toward the Middle East is where there's turmoil, the people making the movie just suck, that's that, end of story.
