Review of Struck by Lightning (2013) by Dana M — 15 Jan 2013
I'm a huge Chris Colfer fan, I've been following him since his days on glee. So I was admittedly kind of disappointed when I finally saw SBL. I think what frustrated me was that it did so much so well but the underlying message was flawed and contradicting.
I found myself on multiple occasions rolling my eyes at the way the main character is incredibly rude to his classmates before they are to him, yet the audience is supposed to see him as the victim. I don't want to ignore the things that worked though- because there were several key things; the cast carried the movie, particularly Allison Janney, and it's wasn't afraid to take risks- the ending, although ultimately it didn't come full circle as much as I'd hope, it (unintentionally, it seems) accomplished the feeling of uncomfortable acceptance of the nature of life that it set out to.
I think it was worth watching but the hypocrisy of the anti-bullying undertone and the unlikable main character still irritates me too much to give the movie a better rating.
