Review of Stroszek (1977) by Kevin M — 24 Dec 2007
A subtle but damning satire of capitalism and a skillful deconstruction of the American Dream. Hilarious to boot, with one of the oddest storylines committed to film. Shot mostly in Railroad Flats, Wisconsin, home of Ed Gein and at least three other serial killers (according to one of the many actual locals in the supporting cast).
It's a land of dancing chickens, but if there's one thing you can trust it's a huge pump-action shotgun. One of Herzog's many masterpieces, this one most closely resembles a comedy, but it's tinged with a very dark, cynical streak.
Stroszek cannot be pigeonholed into any genre because it is so defiantly nonconformist. Too bad Anchor Bay has graced it with one of the worst DVD covers ever created.
