Review of Stronger (2017) by Brandon W — 01 Oct 2017
Stronger is directed by David Gordon Green, and it stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, and Miranda Richardson in a drama biographical about a man who works at Costco that wants to support a girl that he knows that's going to be in the Boston Marathon by going over at the end of the Boston Marathon, only to get his legs blown off during the Boston Massacre, and he has to spend his life pulling himself together with no legs.
I've been looking forward to this after watching Patriot's Day, and the trailers got me more curious of it, but the only issue is that the movie is not in nearest theaters for me. So when I got out of college I literally drove over 30 minutes to go see this movie, and drove over 40 minutes back home, which was interesting to say at least, and I believe it was worth the drive as I really enjoyed this movie.
Jake Gyllenhaal is absolutely fantastic in this, and I never see a bad performance out of him yet which makes me hope that he at least gets nominated for an Oscar. I've heard about Tatiana Maslany in her TV show Orphan Black, which I haven't seen but want to, and so this is the first time that I've seen her in anything, and she does a great job trying to support for Jake Gyllenhaal's character, while at points she gets really tired of the way he acts, and Miranda Richardson is also great, in fact, nobody was weak in this film, which is cool as half the people in this I don't recognize at all.
The story is really interesting that brings some investing characterization into the actual people that were based on this movie. The writing by John Pollono is well-written that seems to write a lot of human dialogue that gets you sucked in to the characters that felt like human beings to me, and when there were arguments, it's very legitimate that makes you want to help them out, even if it's not your business.
There are some moments that are cliched, but the thing is about it that saves it, is that they are executed very well that you might as well have seen it for the first time. Stronger is a fantastic drama that never runs out of steam and gives memorable performances out of every actor here, especially Jake Gyllenhaal.
