I don't know why the reviewer expresses surprise that the U.S. Army "cooperated" willingly enough; the film presents a "less-than-rosy" view, yes, but it's not like "Full Metal Jacket" less-than-rosy.
The character portrayals are good, but still sketchy. There is no heavy moralizing or social comment.
