Review of Stripes (1981) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
Today's review features a simple film with a simple plot and a lot of simple stars.
Bill Murray heads of the cast list as a down, out, and loving it New York cab driver. His friend is an English language teacher for adult foreigners. After his girl leaves him, John(Bill) and Russell(Harold Ramis) decide that the only way to make something of themselves and meet girls(focusing more on the latter) is to join the army. Joining the cast from then on is Warren Oates as their hard-ass c.o. Sergeant Hulka, John Candy as the lovable oaf Ox, and John Laroquette plays Stillman, the bumbling promotion hungry colonel. Of course being a Bill Murray movie, there is plenty of fun. Training scenes, and debauchery galore. Strong in the comedy, but weak in the action. it's basically 1.5 hours of Murray stand-up, with a pinch of military spice thrown in. Stripes has plenty of laughs, which is all we can expect. Stripes gets 6 out of 10.
