Review of Strings (2004) by Tibor B — 18 Aug 2008
Beautifully crafted puppet feature film. The lighting and attention to detail is stunning, and some of the ideas integrating the puppets to their world are very creative - the puppets strings are literally their own delicate mortality, and new babies are carved by their parents and given strands of their own strings to be "born".
Unfortunately the story and dialogue are both very lacklustre, it attempts Shakespearean intrigue but gets bogged down in some very humourless generic fantasy elements. Beautiful as the puppets and their body movements are, the lack of facial movement is a distraction - and cynics will of course pick holes in the "well how do they enter buildings" etc etc puppet logistics.
