Review of Strictly Ballroom (1992) by Alan M — 11 Nov 2007
"Love is in the air" in this wonderful romantic comedy/drama that marked the directorial debut of Baz Luhrmann.
Strictly Ballroom is considerably more restrained than Luhrmann's later work, Romeo & Juliet and Moulin Rouge. However, this movie's more conventional storytelling is still laced with unconventional touches that exhibit Luhrmann's trademark dynamic style; a creative collaboration yielding a harmonious blend of sharp editing and dazzling cinematography.
The buoyant visual flair is reinforced with considerable dramatic weight. This is embodied by the words "A life lived in fear... ...Is a life half lived" that echo profoundly throughout the movie, lighting the fuse that culminates in a glorious explosion of passion and sparkling colour.
