Review of Strictly Ballroom (1992) by Natalie A — 21 May 2008
They say, "A life lived in fear is a life half lived." What about a life lived HALF in fear? According to this basic formula, if:
(100% fear = 50% life),.
Then:
(50% fear = 75% life).
Therefore, a life lived HALF in fear equates roughly to three-quarters of a life FULLY lived. That actually sounds pretty good to me, especially if you could manage to condense most of your fear-time into your sleep-time (100% nightmares, eventually, being the unfortunate inverse outcome). And if you could reduce your fear by even a couple of percentage points from there, you'd be living more than 75% of your waking life completely fear-free!!! I think this is a worthy goal and a reasonable percentage of fearlessness to shoot for in real life. Achieving those kind of numbers is probably more realistic than, say, attempting to act like you're 100% fear-free, which is mostly only for people in movies and on TV. And, even then, it is important to remember that people in movies and on TV are just ACTING fearless, not ACTUALLY fearless.
To sum up, this was a very nice movie. I liked it a lot. I admire Fran and Scott for facing their fears and dancing their own steps. My heroes!
