Review of Street Thief (2006) by Kyle H — 29 Sep 2010
What a crazy movie as it attacked me in multiple ways.
On one hand I kept going, damn Kaspar, why do you have to be such an ass? So lonely? Such a hard-ass? I felt bad for him. I felt bad for myself. I felt bad for society. I felt bad for those who he stole from.
But on the other hand I kept telling myself... why couldn't I do that? I've always had that tinge where some crime is tantalizing to me and this movie kind of tapped into those feelings for me. We all have those things we want to do for our adrenaline fix. For some it is driving fast. Others it is sky diving. Yet for others it is investing in a risky stock. And for Kaspar it is planning and executing that "score.".
Or is it? Kaspar views it just as another job. It kind of reminded me of the serial killers who thought that their killing was OK. Likewise, Kaspar did it as a profession. He didn't view himself as a degenerate or a problem to society. He just did it to do it - to live.
On another level it made me think about life and humans and what is it that holds us back from being primal? Simple words on a piece of paper (the law). But if we didn't have that, what would life be like? Would we all resort to a life like Kaspar with stealing? Murdering? What would society look like without laws? Hmmm...
In conclusion, the movie kind of left me with this icky feeling at the end. Not because of how it ended, but what it made me think about with me and my life.
