Review of Street Fighter (1994) by Steve W — 18 Apr 2013
This movie is like a plate of nachos. Smothered in cheese, not good for you, but enjoyable to consume.
People might not have understood that this was supposed to be a campy film. It was advertised as a straight up action flick starring Jean Claude Van Damme, and boy were they surprised.
Anyone who was a fan of the video game was probably offended. None of the actors resemble their video game counterparts, while other characters were shifted to sidekicks or idiots. (Zangieff) There is s surprising lack of actual martial arts fight scenes, since this is an adaptation of a fighting video game.
The only thing that made this turd tolerable was Raul Julia as General Bison. He plays his completely straight and egotistical as possible, reaching heights of over-acting that none other can accomplish. Raul plays it with such relish and grandeur its really a thing to behold. (RIP Raul Julia).
Its every bit as campy as Adam West Batman, and if you can dig that you can "enjoy" this.
