Review of Straw Dogs (2011) by Susan P — 27 Jun 2012
I'm surprised - I really liked a lot of things about the original film (well, as much as you can like something so violent). They're almost identical, but the redneck American southerners were far more frightening to me than the English countryfolk, plus the flawed ending was improved upon.
The female lead was more powerful and the story overall seemed to be more complex than the original. The ending was better, which bugged me a bit and even bugged the director of the original. It was a thoughtful thriller and a true horror movie about inhumanity, the inability for people to communicate, violence, the treatment of women, education and the lack thereof, class warfare.
..it had a lot of themes and although it was deeply disturbing, it's a movie that makes you think. There really aren't a lot of those around (probably why it bombed - or maybe they were like me and said, why bother remaking such a great film?).
Plus, they reference the Tao Te Ching in the title, which is a little weird to me because I have a beautiful copy of it I just looked at the other day, totally unrelated.
