Review of Straw Dogs (2011) by Eytan D — 25 Jul 2012
It follows the original closely, but what makes Straw Dogs a good remake is the fact that the story doesn't lose its juice. Writer and director Rod Lurie incorporates Peckinpah's controversial messages successfully into his remake, and he creates some great metaphors for the film's future emotional and physical war.
While he throws in plenty of brutal violence in the home invasion, the rest of the film is a suspenseful trip into the dark, hidden nature of the human being. James Marsden and Kate Bosworth are very good as David and Amy (Bosworth is actually better than Susan George), and Alexander Skarsgard fits the role of Charlie like a glove (watch True Blood to see another villainous portrayal).
This one, like the original, is the thinking man's home invasion thriller. I walked away satisfied.
