Review of Straw Dogs (2011) by Jc E — 25 Oct 2012
I think the only way this ended up on my Netflix queue was because it was suggested to me when I was rating movies on the rental site. I decided to give it a shot though, since Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), James Marsden (Superman Returns), and Alexander Skarsgard ("True Blood") are as appealing as ever - which means that they're nothing to write home about.
Bosworth isn't as catty as she was 'Blue Crush' or '21' (though, it's a step up from her as Lois Lane), Marsden isn't as likeable as he was as Cyclops or as likably goofy as he was in flicks like 'Enchanted', and Skarsgard outside his role as Eric Northman just doesn't seem right.
The movie is so full of clichés related to the South that it's really hard to watch at times. Not only do they get deer season completely wrong, but they apparently think that going to a football game is just what you do after you've been sexually assaulted.
It's pretty lame, really, and you really shouldn't waste your time on it. I don't know what the Dustin Hoffman/Susan George 1971 original was like, but if this was a traditional remake, it had to be better.
