Review of Straw Dogs (2011) by David P — 28 Jan 2012
Once again another thought provoking masterpiece is flushed down the crapper with a remake that adds nothing new or interesting to the original concept with the exception of location. The whole time I felt like I was watching a bad TV movie remake or sequel that they used to pump out in the '70s & '80s to make a quick and easy buck.
The original version of STRAW DOGS is a complex and complicated exploration on they many levels of violence and cruelty that may be found within us all while this one is nothing more than a thoughtless orgy of violence and cruelty.
Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard are the only two actors in this film that are marginally interesting. Shame on the the people in marketing who thought that they could be lazy and just replace the original poster image of Dustin Hoffman wearing the broken glasses with James (I suck as an actor) Marsden.
It shows how unimportant Marsden is since they felt they needed to put an image of Skarsgard reflecting in his non-reflecting eye glasses which then renders Marsden completely unrecognizable. Once upon a time writer/director Rod Lurie showed great promise with his film THE CONTENDER.
Unfortunately for his that was six forgettable films ago.
