Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Lee B — 02 Jan 2011
This is the Peckinpah movie that I never got around to seeing. So now I have, and this is a very depressing movie, and scary. I grew up in a big city or just minutes outside and have lived around them my entire life. Small town life I genuinely find scary. This movie kind of reaffirms my fears.
Anyways, back to the movie. It really is a slow grind, and I did like the symbolic ending. However, the sense of dread is there from the start. For the turn the main character has to go through, I think it should have been a little less ominous. Then again, I already knew what it was about before I saw it, so maybe I projected that onto it. But that middle scene with the wife I didn?t know about and ? holy ouch! That?s really does stack the mean on this movie. But even though it is a slow grind, the pace really means something by the end.
