Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Danny M — 05 Nov 2007
Confusing movie. I'm pretty sure it's about cowardice, and how catastrophic it can be not to take a stand until it's too late. This isn't to say that those guys don't get what they deserve, because watching that scene is like giving voice to one's deepest, most awesome urges. Who doesn't secretly fantasize about killing their more obnoxious acquaintances with firepokers? It's just that Hoffman's marriage appears to have been ruined, Susan George is traumatized for eternity, and the cat died.
I like David Warner in this movie. He makes a good village idiot, especially if you're used to seeing him as brilliant scientists or wizards.
