Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Ben W — 19 Nov 2007
A mans home is his castle. that becomes an almost comic sentiment after watching this great film from sam peckinpah. it came out in the midst of several high profile ultra-violent films from 1971: kubkricks a clockwork orange and dirty harry and though I hold a special place in my heart (?) for clockwork, I think this is the best of those 3 films.
the tendancy among humans for brutality. its a very honest film which I highly respect. but bear in mind, this is not an easy film. aside from the violence there is a very disturbing rape scene that goes on long enough to be supremely uncomfortable.
which, I think, is its intended effect. it also investigates the emotionally connections between eroticism and humanitys propensity for violence which harkens forward to such works as cronenbergs a history of violence.
it certainly hits on a very personal level.
