Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Fuad F — 16 Jan 2008
Most Hardyesque film ever made. Mass violence covers the film like a bed of leaves. More disturbing, Peckinpah manufactures the villian in the neebish and prickless Hoffman character, who denies his own bestial nature.
The thugs are only an extension of his own 'id,' that sieges the house to rape and kill his wife. The slap to his wife's face becomes the physical mesh of his mind and body acting on that hidden impulse.
The story unfolds like a Greek tragedy.
