Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Dave S — 17 Apr 2008
This is a film not for everyone. Sam Peckinpah's psychological exploration of both sexual and physical violence is both uncompromising and confronting. Dustin Hoffman is brilliant as a nerdy, American mathematician as he transforms himself and his manhood from a pacifist to raging attacker.
Susan George is equally brilliant as she plays both a childish, erotic yet vulnerable wife. Controversial for its violence and a shocking rape scene, Straw Dogs' moral ambiguity and chaotic, violent and dare I say brilliant ending will leave you shaken, stirred and in a disturbing sense vindicated.
