Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Adam Z — 14 Feb 2009
By far Peckinpah's most brutal film. Manages to be potent and shocking without feeling exploitive. Hoffman is really amazing in this one. There's something oddly charismatic about him: perspiring, wearing broken eyeglasses, a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a crowbar in one hand.
I had a lot of problems with Susan George's character, though. She seemed incredibly stupid, gullible and seemed at times as if she actually wanted the rape that was coming to her, but her peformance is still a brave one.
Definately not a movie for the faint of heart.
