Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Ben K — 18 May 2011
This movie's controversial just to be controversial. It doesn't really have anything to say about anything other than the fact that Britain was practically a 3rd world country in the 70's and Dustin Hoffman's character is almost willfully antagonistic.
How this movie exists as an examination of violence is beyond me. The buildup is so ham fisted and the ending is so contrived it strains credulity. If someone kills your cat and hangs it in your bedroom closet, I don't think the appropriate response is "Hey let's go hunting with the butchers that did it.
" And let's not get started on the rape scene that's shot like a soft core porno that has absolutley no point except to titilate. This movie should have been buried in the 70's never to be resurrected.
