Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by I Don't Know W — 17 Sep 2011
Dustin hoffman is beyond awesome, as always. other than that, it was pretty unenjoyable, honestly. the comedic nature of the village idiot-hooligans greatly took away from the intensity and desperation of the moment - they reminded me too much of the droogs in Clockwork Orange, but without the allegorical meaning/relevance. also, the "famous" rape scene was poorly set-up and acted in my opinion.
Yes, I did watch this just so I could have seen it before the remake comes out. but now I am considerably looking forward to the remake because what I felt were a lot of the original's shortcomings (unbelievable antagonists, extremely weak "lead" female, etc.) are attributable to stereotypically low-caliber filmmaking of the 70s (whether that's aimed at the writing, directing, or acting).
