Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Nick H — 05 Dec 2011
Released in the same year as "A Clockwork Orange" (Stanly Kubrick, 1971), this film was also banned. it wasn't until 2002 it was released uncut to video and DVD.
in a Cornwall setting, Straw Dogs emphasises the hidden violence a man can enforce when his family is threatened. not having the styistic composure of A Clockwork Orange due to budgeting reasons Straw Dogs needed to rely on its morally destructible subject matter and slow buid up of suspense to shock the audience. the infamous rape scene adds depth by testing the audiences' own moral structure to the limit. however you interpret Straw Dogs it has gained cult status for a reason and is both gripping and challenging from start to finish.
