Review of Straw Dogs (1971) by Dave L — 17 Apr 2012
A grisly, violent Sam Peckinpah film that was banned in the UK in the 1970s. Dustin Hoffman, in a mesmerizing performance, plays a mathematician who moves to England with his wife. The couple receives the attention of the locals including an old boyfriend of Amy (played by Susan George).
She is raped and the film becomes somewhat of a meditation on violence. Even those who appear to be cowardly and what they are capable of. I guess one can also view this movie as a statement on what masculinity truly characterizes.
Some of the plot is a little weak and some concidences not wholly believable. Still this movie leaves some kind of impression after viewing it.
