Review of Strangers on a Train (1951) by Johannes J — 17 Dec 2008
What a solid film- I have yet to complete my viewings of each Hitchcock masterpiece, but I'm willing to bet that this one could quite possibly be my favorite. And if not, then it's certainly top three material.
There's so much going on in this film- love, murder, insanity...homosexual undertones (my favorite being the latter). It's the classic story of one man's insanity ruining the lives of so many others- sure, he talks fancy and wears neat, embroidered ties, but Bruno Anthony is a monster.
And he doesn't even realize it, which could be the worst thing about him. I was literally on the edge of my seat with this one, shouting at Guy what I would do if I was stuck in such a ridiculous and terrifying situation ("Don't kill the dad, Guy! Please don't kill the dad!"), and when the end came I was emotionally and mentally satisfied.
And trust me, you'll have an even deeper experience when you realize that, although they never come outright and say it, Bruno is TOTALLY gay. Look for the little things and you'll see. And you'll like it way more.
