Review of Stranger Than Paradise (1984) by Paul J — 30 May 2009
Jarmusch's style is born in this independent masterwork. This is the epitome of understatement. Hilarious, bold and completely original in its "ordinary" approach. Jarmusch takes single snapshots that capture mundane moments that ring true and more importantly revolve around curiously intriguing personalities.
In the end, the simplicity of the story comes together when we realize that all three characters are exploring their homes by uniting, despite the fact that they are physically separated by an absurd misunderstanding.
My favorite shot is when they visit Lake Eerie - they stare out into bland nothingness, matching the audiences same predicament while watching the film. They're waiting for something to happen, just like the viewer.
Some might find this boring, but I can't help but find it completely honest and somehow hysterically funny.
