Review of Stranger by the Lake (2013) by Randy M — 20 Oct 2013
An original, effective and very erotic psychological thriller set on a picturesque gay cruising ground, exploring themes not only of love and loneliness but also the dangers and thrills of anonymous encounters and how far one would go to get them.
By confining the film to only one outdoor location over and over again, as well as making it solely from the POV of the main character, it enhances the claustrophobic tension of the story and makes for an interesting challenge for the filmmakers - which for the most part they met.
It only falls apart in the end when, at least in my humble opinion, indulgence for an over-artistic/pretentious open ending forces the script to veer off course, into a laughable and illogical dead end.
