Review of Stranger by the Lake (2013) by Matthew F — 01 Jun 2014
If I can spare one fellow filmgoer the tedious agony of watching 'Stranger By the Lake,' I will not have lived my life in vain. I enjoy watching foreign films that challenge my American beliefs and standards for what "good film" is, but they still must be entertaining and the characters must be believable.
"Stranger" achieves neither, with a dull, slow-moving plot entirely predicated on characters doing the opposite of what a sane, semi-moral human being would do-- with no explanation why. The climax is exactly what you expect and the ending is no ending at all.
If you took out the porn and changed the characters to heterosexuals, it would have never been made. Another example of crap gay cinema masquerading as high art.
