Review of Strangeland (1998) by Tobias L — 24 Nov 2006
This is a tough movie for me to review. I saw it twice in a row, and really can't decide what the overall film was TRULY trying to say. In some areas it is a very intelligent psychological look into a sadist. It is well-written, the sadist-(who goes by the name Capt Howdy) is almost poetic. Having said that, at many moments-(espicially near the end) it turns into almost a fetish movie for people who like piercing. Director John Pieplow does not have the directing talent to direct a movie like this, and the directing overall is pretty damn bad. If this wasw given to Takashi Miike or even Eli Roth, they would have made this masterful-(it sure does have the potential to be) and it has so much potential, but why the hell did the writer-(Dee Snider) insist on making some absolutely unnecessary scenes of torture? I want to see a horror film, not a fucking fetish film!
The characters transfrom from good to bad, likeable to dislikeable. And after the 40 minute mark, the only thing you will be thinking is "What the hell is going on here?".
Also watch for Robert Englund-(who played Freddy Krueger), who clearly enjoys his role.
