Review of Strange Days (1995) by Melissa C — 04 Oct 2007
We watched this in my pop culture class - apparently it goes against the Male Gaze norm - don't ask me what that is because I haven't done the reading yet. Anyway, it's another one of those dystopian movies, but instead of being set a zillion years in the future, it actually happens right before New Years 2000.
That kind of makes it irrelevant now, but it's still an interesting enough movie to watch even if it isn't true to what really happened. I can't really say it's my kind of movie, because there's a lot of nudity (not to mention a really SICK violent rape/murder scene.
.. EEWW), but if you can get past all that, it's really not that bad. And girls kick ass! Whoo! Juliette Lewis is terrible - completely unconvincing ("I... love... you, Len-ny"), but the rest of the cast is okay.
Ralph Fiennes' accent slips a bit in places (yow, he sounds like James Woods without that British lit), but... not bad. I'm rambling. It's not the first sci-fi/dystopia/action/crime movie I'd pick off the shelf, but it's not a bad thing to watch if it happens to be hanging around.
Just make sure you haven't eaten immediately prior to that rape scene. Eeew.
