Review of Strange Days (1995) by Callum R — 20 Feb 2010
My main interest in seeing this was to see an early film by the director of "The Hurt Locker" (which I found to be rather brilliant). This film however is, for the most part, a giant clusterfuck.
And not in a good way. Its not without a spark or two, but definitely suffers from a bad case of trying to be all things for all people. Its: a futuristic/apocalyptic action movie (with the one-liner close-ups, the slow motion bang-glamor and the whole bit), a suspense thriller, two love stories, a revolutionary cry against keeping the black man down, a greek tragedy and on and on.
In the end, all of that just boils down to a self-consciously manipulative and badly thought out mess. But hey, if this is what it takes for a film like "The Hurt Locker" to ultimately be made, why the hell not?
