Review of Strange Brew (1983) by John N — 09 Feb 2011
Very disappointing. Much of the humor is tasteless and unmemorable. One of the major problems of the movie is that there is not enough screen-time devoted to Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. Whenever they are permitted to just be themselves the movie is a lot of fun.
The interaction between the two brothers is complimentary and hilarious to watch. Why couldn't we have seen more of this? The plot, being under-developed and arbitrary in spite its "Shakespearean leanings", draws attention away from the comedic Canadian duo and reduces the movie to a conventional Hollywood comedy interspersed with a few enjoyable skits.
This is why the "Wayne's World" franchise works and this movie doesn't. Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey are allowed to just "do their thing" and we the viewers are permitted into their world.
If "Strange Brew" had been more like a "day in the life of" kinda movie I think it would have been much more enjoyable and perhaps could have become a classic.
