Review of Straight Outta Compton (2015) by Sean C — 04 Oct 2015
Music biopics are usually awful. This one works due to its relentless style, superb performances, and complex characters....except for Dre. This film is Dre propaganda. He does no wrong. We are made to sympathize with him and root for him, from the moment his Mom kicks him out the house.
His misogyny and bitter hatred of Tupac is quietly swept under the rug. For a film trying to be "real" this is a major weakness. All around though, this film is timely (but don't fool yourself, NWA was not a political group), tight, and recreates the mood of an era.
