Review of Straight Outta Compton (2015) by Lisa T — 19 Oct 2015
This movie further perpetuates the violent cuture from which the music of these artists comes from and absolves them of all responsibility inherent to the victim culture mentality. While we watch African American cast members unapologetically deal drugs, weild guns and threaten people with them whenever anything goes wrong, they also villainize police as if the police whose job it is to keep people from dealing drugs and killing eachother have no place in protecting African Americans.
They have a special cultures that allows them to ignore police authority and challenge it at every turn and to kill one another or hurt one another without justification. The story is old, there is nothing original the acting is moderate to good, not great and the message is ugly.
These men have few redeeming qualities as human beings, they have done nothing to lift the culture and the music continues to perpetuate the violence. One thing I appreciated was that they said out right that they would not let the governments concerns about the musics influence stop them so the idea many blacks have about gangsta rap being a plot by the government to get blacks to kill each other is put back on the artists.
Of course whether they will ever accept accountability for their actions is questionable.
