Review of Straight Outta Compton (2015) by Jim C — 05 Mar 2016
An engrossing albeit uneven musical drama about the birth of modern hip-hop. Dre, Easy-E, Ren, Cube and company were the voice of a generation with a message that is particularly relevant given today's culture wars and the "Black Lives Matter" movement.
The film had me hooked until it lost its way at the break-up of NWA (spoiler?), and performances were mixed among the broad supporting cast. But the film is a must-see for anyone that came of age at the turn-of-the-decade, and a must-see for any fan of the genre.
