Review of Straight Outta Compton (2015) by K Nife C — 03 Apr 2016
I'm amazed that anyone would sit through a 165 minute biopic about NWA, but it was worth the time spent. Paul Giamatti hams it up as the Ruthless Records/NWA manager, and Ice Cube's son does a really good Ice Cube impression.
But I think this was mostly made to coincide with Dre's new album, to prime his relevance. Mostly I think that because the character that is based on him in the movie is barely flawed and usually in the right always, when in reality he is kind of a shitty person.
I teared up when Easy-E died of AIDS (oops spoilers!). I think this might have worked better as a miniseries because they seem to gloss over a lot of stuff. "Oh no! D.O.C. was in a car accident, his career could be over!" Next scene, he is in pristine condition getting ready to rap.
Also, the ending seems like it's purposely meant to set up a sequel. Sug: "what are you gonna call it?" Dre: "Aftermath" *roll credits*.
