A rousing robin hood tale in the form of the genesis of gangsta rap packs energy from its fresh cast and of course the revolutionary creative music it portrays.
The freedom crusaders of NWA are repped well and the effectiveness of the film depends on it - because the script is junior - avoiding any serious look into the complex social issues that fuelled their uprising. SOC is primarily done as coming of age friendship tale, which is fair enough, but by reel three the power of the movement and the ceiling they broke through takes a backseat in the Impala. Nonetheless SOC is a satisfying film faithful to the powers of inspired music.
