Review of Straight Outta Compton (2015) by J M — 02 Aug 2016
Very few biopics manage to hold it together as well as Straight Outta Compton, a film about the rise and fall and rise again of NWA. On the acting front, the members of the group are solid, and even bare an uncanny resemblance to their real life counterparts (Which is easy, though, when Ice Cube's son is playing Ice Cube.
) Even Paul Giamatti rings it in with a strong, albeit partially hokey, performance. On the writing side of things, the film doesn't hold back, which is both a blessing and a curse. We get to see the raw ordeals these men went through, but the downside to that is that the film really starts to pad itself in the middle, looking for some type of connective tissue to reach the end.
Overall, as far as biopics go, one could do much worse than this film.
