Review of Straight Outta Compton (2015) by Jimbo N — 23 Jul 2017
UNRATED DIRECTORS CUT.
A harsh and wonderful look at one of the greatest, iconic and influential hip-hop groups that will ever be. Gary Gray creates a monstrous biopic that covers so much time and detail with great effect, pacing and structure feels natural and immersive. Performances are great, Giamatti and O'Shea Jackson Jr. are fantastic but it's Mitchell who deserved the greater recognition and arguably should've earned a Academy Award nomination for his portrayal. The only real issue is the rather forced cameo's and important people who just show up for fan service and add nothing.
