A combination of different storytelling techniques, plus the smart move to keep the actual subject of the documentary (the director herself) well into the background makes for an overall effective telling of a rather complex story.
The fact that not everyone is as up front with recollecting details adds to the intrigue. Once you think you know how the story's going to go....yet another twist awaits...
