Review of Stories We Tell (2012) by Bobby L — 07 Jun 2013
Stories We Tell is one of those movies where talking about it and analyzing it is more interesting than the film itself...at least for me. There's a lot of interesting ideas about storytelling, filmmaking, and memory that Sarah Polley is playing with here.
But the film just couldn't keep me emotionally or intellectually interested the whole time. It felt too long and drawn out, and a little too specific. Yes, Polley's family has an interesting story, but not interesting enough for 1:45.
Maybe 45 minutes to an hour like a TV show documentary profile. I think this story in a feature film format would play better if it was fictionalized and dramatized.
