Review of Stories We Tell (2012) by Betty H — 06 Sep 2013
Mesmerizing film which at first, fooled me into thinking I was watching family movies accompanied by a young woman's narrative while she explores her mother's secret life. It took a while for me to realize that I was watching a brilliant film that explores how we perceive our past.
Memories are both flawed and wonderful and the story was full of surprise revelations about the mother and her secret longings and life. The flow of the storyline is smooth and draws the viewer into sharing a need to know the answers being sought by the youngest daughter seeking her father.
The family is both unique and familiar in that there is recognition of all our family stories and what they reveal or don't reveal. Truth is a very slippery character in this film and even at the end there is a sense that there is more to tell.
