Review of Stop Making Sense (1984) by James M — 19 Jun 2007
Not a concert film but a full blown cinematic event. Throughout the evening, we are taken through the history of Talking Heads, starting with David Byrne performing an acoustic version of "Psycho Killer" and climaxing when the remaining band members and extra personnel arrive on stage to give us the most energetic rendition of "Burning Down the House" ever heard.
But don?t fret; the fun doesn?t stop half way. The latter part of the set keeps the energy going and doesn't stop to take a breath; it's almost too much to take one sitting. Director Demme wisely never shows the lucky audience; the focus is on the band alone.
Other highlights include "Naïve Medley (This Must Be the Place)" and a performance by the Tom Tom Club (Heads minus Byrne with bassist Tina Weymouth on lead vocals). A celebration of music from one of America's legendary bands.
