Review of Stop-Loss (2008) by Mary C — 14 Feb 2010
Stop Loss is a moving drama about a man's return to his hometown after serving in Iraq. It shows the struggles of a heroic man to deal with the trauma he suffered over the course of 120 combat missions.
American society has done better at treating returning soldiers as heroes, but still doesn't understand them as human beings who have suffered a great deal of physical and emotional pain. Brandon, despite his long service, is "stop lossed" and prevented from being discharged from the Army. He's supposed go back again for more missions, because he's an experienced and very good soldier. But Brandon has reached the breaking point while the Army sees him merely as another tool in their arsenal.
This is a very moving film that shows the plight of veterans on a human level.
