I don't recall a short story by Poe of this title, however Brad Anderson does try to attempt Poe's loopiness... sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing. I found myself questioning Dr. Newgate's (Jim Sturgess) motivations throughout most of the film.
When faced with the twists at the end, Anderson got me over the hump. Barely. Although this has all the elements of a gothic horror, Anderson does not mix them together as deftly as Poe would. Overall, the film is well acted and the actors do the best they can with the material provided.
