Review of Stone (2012) by Jesse O — 19 Jan 2011
You know at first I thought this was a pretty average movie, until my aunt just pointed out to me that its actually a much deeper movie than that. It has to do with what Stone's character talked about, us being a part of this giant plan and how that fits into the movie.
It's actually really interesting view in metaphysics. Jack needed Stone in his life to sort of remove him from his cynical ways of viewing life and people. And that would not have been possible if Stone hadn't burnt his grandparents' house down after they were murdered.
So when you actually look at it like that and realizing how subtle this movie makes that point across, its actually one hell of a good movie. I don't know why, but apparently I didn't want to think at all after watching it.
Like I said its actually a pretty smart and clever movie in how they get their point across without beating you over the head with it, so I absolutely respect whoever wrote this movie for doing something different.
But to get your point across, you need a strong cast to help you bring your script to life. And this movie has a really strong cast. Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors. He always does his best, even if the movie isn't as strong as it should be.
Consistently Edward is a better actor than Nicholas Cage and who's the one who has an Oscar? Robert de Niro is still awesome, he may be old and somewhat lazy, but damnit when he needs to put it on he does.
And Mila Jovovich...well what can be said about her, she's lovely. And she's great in this movie, probably the best performance in this movie was hers. People don't give her enough credit for being a hell of an actress.
I guess that's what ten years of appearing in shitty resident evil movies will do for you. But hopefully she starts to get more dramatic roles as I think she'll end up surprising people. But yea, this movie is pretty damn good with good performances and strong, but subtle, message.
This is my first review from my new Android phone so yea hopefully it is not a jumbled mess...
