I'm surprised how many critics didn't understand this movie, although I'm in basic agreement that over all it's not a must see.The movie's point is that Mabry is just as big of a scumbag as Stone (we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God), and that Christianity is a powerless and antiquated religion compared with new age spirituality in which Stone is transformed.
Mabry is doomed to his own personal hell as his wife has had enough, she could tolerate his emotional abuse, but not his infidelity -and burns their house down and then leaves him with nothing.
