Review of Stone (2010) by Ian G — 23 Jan 2011
Given the two top tier talents involved in terms of acting, as well as a couple character actors of note in supporting roles, its quite surprising how dull and unengaging Stone actually is. Another story of ones morality and belief system being thrown into question being in contact with a system that challenges them every day, Stone makes you want to shift uncomfortably to see what the audience might do in that situation.
That being said almost all the characters are so flawed to one degree or another that its hard to necessarily root or care for what they are going through, even the Frances Conroy character as the long tortured Deniro's wife character.
The other major enemy here is the extremely quiet/slow pacing of the project which makes the film a chore to get through given the questions it attempts to ask. An unfortunate waste of time and I am totally wishing for Norton to start picking some more interesting projects that actually engage the audience rather that these duds since he seems to have scalled back some of his high profile projects.
Also seems as if the film didn't really have full closure outside of breaking up the lead relationship, since it appears as if Conroy, Deniro and Jovovich barely changed throughout.
