Review of Stone (2010) by Erno K — 03 Feb 2011
This is one of those rare movies that doesn't really have any definite conclusion, but is still good for some reason.
I really dig the beginning of the film. It tells us something important about the characters, even though I'm never quite sure what it is. However, it still had a strong effect on me. Can't really explain this one, you must watch it yourself. And then you can explain the significance of the opening scene to me.
The three main actors - De Niro, Eddy Norton and Jovovich - give very strong performances all around. Even Bobby decides to really act for a change and not just sleep-walk through the flick. Although he is still my least favorite of the bunch. Unexpectedly my favorite one was Milla, who continues to surprise me with her acting chops. Why the fuck does she keep doing shit like Resident Evil 17, I'll never understand. She manages to make her character very multidimensional, and I still don't know if she was a psycho or not. She scared the shit out of me in one scene, though, with her sudden demonic expression. Or maybe it was the entire mood of the scene, I don't know.
It was never clear to me who the main character was, as the movie follows everyone in equal measure. That was a bit strange, but I welcomed it. I also have no idea what the film's message is in the end, or if there indeed even is any, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the experience.
Stone is a profound film about something, with great actors. But goddammit, I have no idea what. Even the ending is open to interpretation. This one is a conundrum to me, as I can't really even explain why I liked it so much. But I did.
